There are a couple of things you can do to get info on what is going wrong. Hopefully this will help you figure out how to avoid the problem or work round it.

The main purpose of VLC Streamer is to let you stream movies live without having to go through iTunes.

(if you figure out something that is generally useful - then please [http://hobbyistsoftware.com/contact-us let me know])

To do this,

==Try a known movie==

# Launch VLC Streamer

# Tap on the computer you want to connect to
 +
# 'Add a Movie' and select the file you want
 +
# Select a streaming quality and press play

This will stream the movie live to your iDevice without needing to copy it to the device. It uses VLC for the transcoding, so most movie formats are supported.

(Right click on the link and click 'save content as...')

I have tested this movie on Windows and Mac to check that VLC Streamer can handle it.

or, if you have already watched the movie, or have already set it converting, you can transfer from the movie list

#Click on the 'open working directory' button in the helper

# Tap on the info button next to the movie
#You'll see a series of directories corresponding to converted movies

# Select 'copy to device'
#Open the directory that corresponds to the problematic file

#Open the cmd.txt file and copy the text

#Open a command window (Start menu, run program, type 'cmd' )

#Paste the command from cmd.txt (use right click to paste)

this will run the command that VLC streamer is using to convert the movie. You should see output from VLC in a new window. Hopefully this will give additional information on what is not working.

VLC Streamer will continue to copy the movie while it is open, and for about 15 minutes in the background.

If VLC streamer is in the background, it will only get limited network bandwidth, so transferring will be slow. Also, it may be closed down by the operating system if another foreground app needs the bandwidth.

Unless the movie is an mp4 type, then VLC Streamer will use the vlc player code on the app to try to play it.

This won't work for every movie - but it will work for most.

You can also run the command from the cmd.txt file (copy it into a terminal window) if you want to re-run the command or modify it

This article assumes you are using VLC Streamer on iOS, and that you are using VLC Streamer version 4.00 or later.

VLC Streamer is primarily about the streaming...

The main purpose of VLC Streamer is to let you stream movies live without having to go through iTunes.

To do this,

  1. Launch VLC Streamer
  2. Tap on the computer you want to connect to
  3. 'Add a Movie' and select the file you want
  4. Select a streaming quality and press play

This will stream the movie live to your iDevice without needing to copy it to the device. It uses VLC for the transcoding, so most movie formats are supported.

You can now transfer movies directly to your device

This will allow you to watch the movies later when you are not connected to your wifi

  1. Select your movie as in the steps above
  2. Tap 'copy to device' instead of play

or, if you have already watched the movie, or have already set it converting, you can transfer from the movie list

  1. Tap on the info button next to the movie
  2. Select 'copy to device'

Vlc streamer will copy the movie over wifi to your device

VLC Streamer will continue to copy the movie while it is open, and for about 15 minutes in the background. If VLC streamer is in the background, it will only get limited network bandwidth, so transferring will be slow. Also, it may be closed down by the operating system if another foreground app needs the bandwidth.

You can also transfer through iTunes

You can also transfer movies through iTunes. Unless the movie is an mp4 type, then VLC Streamer will use the vlc player code on the app to try to play it. This won't work for every movie - but it will work for most.

To transfer movies,

  1. Plug your iDevice into your computer
  2. Select your device in iTunes
  3. Select the Apps tab
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page where you will see a 'Documents' section
  5. Select VLC Streamer on the left of the documents window, and drag your movie to the document list on the right.
