My alarm gets cut off

Alarms selected from the 'Ringtones' list will get cut off when the treo turns off. (this is an annoying 'feature' of the operating system) You can set how long the treo stays on after butler plays an alarm in the Butler Keyguard setting Set 'auto-off after x seconds' in the Butler Keyguard page to the number of seconds that the treo should stay on This applies even if you are not using the Butler Keyguard.

NB: Mp3s and 'old alarms' can continue playing after the treo turns off.

Butler keeps telling me about Rogue Exchange Manager entries

The rogue exchange manager notification is Butler cleaning up an issue that could cause loss of preferences due to a bug in the OS. It can be caused by running certain apps from the sd card.

More details at Palm Source

What happens is, the app in question registers itself, then is moved to the sd card. When another app makes certain calls to the exchange manager, it fails to find the problematic app (it's on the sd card) and causes a crash in which preferences are lost.

Butler is just trying to clean up the mess.

If you don't want this to keep happening, you will either need to delete the application leaving the rogue entry, or keep the application permanently in RAM. To figure out which application is causing the problem, you can use the (excellent & free) application Filez to see which application has the problematic creator id.

I can't get the remote lock to work

Normally the problem with the remote lock is either that you are sending the wrong SMS, or that the trigger isn't what you think. Follow these steps to test it

  1. Make sure Butler is in RAM and not on the SD card
  2. Open the remote lock page (you may need to set the device security password before you can do this)
  3. Select 'Enable remote lock'
  4. Select 'Test Mode'
  5. Set the trigger to 'TestTrigger'
  6. Click OK and close Butler
  7. Send this SMS to your phone 'ButlerLock:TestTrigger'
  8. Watch the phone - the sms should arrive.
  9. The SMS will arrive - but it will appear as '*' rather than showing the message (this is so that your trigger remains secret)
    1. From version 4.94, the incoming sms will say 'SMS Lock Phone Test Received'.
  10. A message window will show for a couple of seconds saying 'SMS Lock Phone Test Received'

Now you can uncheck the 'Test Mode' option and use the remote lock fully.

I can't get the Attention Grabber to play Mp3s for incoming calls

The Attention Grabber won't replace the alerts for any event - it will just nag you after you miss them. So you can't use the Attention Grabber to replace the ring on incoming calls - you can just use it to notify you after you have missed a call. To get mp3 ringtones for incomng calls - try Phone Technician

I can't get the Attention Grabber to work with calendar alerts

To nag about calendar alerts - just select the 'Attention Manager' option in the Attention Grabber. The standard datebook displays alerts through the 'Attention Manager' which is the display that flashes an asterix in the top left of the screen when you ignore an alert. (TIP: Press and hold the centre key on the Treo 650 to open the Attention Manager)

If you are using Datebook5 or Agendus to handle the alerts for calendar entries, then unfortunately Butler cannot intercept them. This is because they don't use the standard 'Attention Manager' system to display alerts. With Agendus, you can choose not to let it handle alerts - in which case The Attention Grabber will be able to intercept them.

The Attention Grabber doesn't play any sound

First check that you haven't selected 'Don't turn on the screen to nag me' in the 'more options' page. If you have selected this, then mp3 alerts and ringtone alerts will not play (they need to turn the screen on to work)

If that doesn't help, try the Mp3 troubleshooting tips above.

I'm still getting the standard alert for an alarm before the Attention Grabber does anything

Then all is as it should be! The attention grabber desn't stop or replace any alarms or alerts - it just supplements them with nags until you notice them! The attention manager will set your LED options immediately after the triggerig event occurs, but will then wait x seconds until doing the first full nag. X here is the number of seconds you choose in the 'repeat every' option.

The Attention Grabber is bugging me when I send an SMS

Actually what is happening is that when you send an sms, your network sends on right back to you as a receipt. You don't see it arrive, but you will see the colour of your message change in the messaging app. If you have the 'Incoming SMS' box checked in the Attention Grabber, then Butler does see this sms and starts nagging. There is an easy workaround. Disable the 'Incoming SMS' checkbox in the attention manager and select the 'Attention Manager' checkbox. Normal sms messages will show in the attention manager (the normal display) and will still trigger the attention grabber.

(on some devices, you can turn off sms receipts -go into your sounds application/preferences. Go to messaging and uncheck show receipt alerts)

The Attention Grabber seems to trigger randomly

What is probably happening here is that some service is sending you an sms which you are not seeing. Typically this will be a 'push notification' to your email client which your email app deletes, or an sms reciept which your network sends and which the sms client deletes.

The solution is fairly simple - just disable the Attention Grabber for 'incoming SMS' and make sure it is enabled for 'Attention Manager Alerts'.

'Normal' sms's which arrive will be shown by the attention manager, so you will still get nagged. 'System' sms messages will not be shown, so they will be ignored by Butler.
