Magic Tones

Magic Tones work with your Palm's ringtone system to add additional capabilities.

The great advantage of this is that once you have created a magic tone, you can pick it from many normal palm apps, so you boost their power without having to change how they work.

Phone Technician uses this to provide custom MP3 ringtones. Rather than stopping the normal ringtone system from playing and then fighting the system to figure out what ringtone to play - Phone Technician just enhances the existing system to let it handle mp3s through Magic Tones, then gets out of the way!

Managing Magic Tones

Currently, you can launch the 'Manage Magic Tones' page from Phone Technician.

This provides a list of tones and lets you play, delete, edit or create new tones.

Magic Tones Settings

First pick your sound! Magic tones can be made with normal ringtones, Mp3s on your SD card, or old alarm sounds.

Pick your vibration and led settings, then decide on your escalation/repeat pattern.

In the example above, the escalation happens every 3 seconds, so every 3 seconds the volume will go up and the vibrate will happen again. In this case, my mp3 is quite long so I don't want it to start again and have left that option unchecked.

If you wanted a ringtone that was silent for 6 seconds, then you could put 'silent for 2 steps'. The first step at 0 seconds would vibrate, as would the second. From the 3rd step the mp3 would start to play.

More settings

Normally the application that is playing the ringtone will specify the volume that your ringtone will start at. This page allows you to override that.

Similarly, the application will normally specify how many times to play the tone. You can override that here too.

If your tone is an MP3, then you can't override the number of times played - in fact Magic Tones will always play it once (repeating according to your 'escalate/repeat' settings.
