First Checks

Most problems that people have relate to a few common issues, so please check these first before more detailed troubleshooting

  1. Check that you have the latest version of the remote helper installed.
  2. Check that your Pre and your computer are both connected to the same local network (sometimes the Pre connects to other networks that are within reach. You can check this in the Wi-Fi menu)
  3. Turn off the firewall in your computer AND the firewall in your router to test if that gives you a connection
    • If you get a connection with the firewalls off, then you can turn them back on and fiddle with the settings to make sure that the connection can get through
  4. Make sure that iTunes has remotes enabled in the preferences.

Check you can connect from your Computer

  1. Fire up the iTunes Remote Helper.
  2. Click on 'Setup Pairing' and then on 'Manual Connection'
  3. You'll see a list of possible IP addresses. We'll call the first one <first address>
  4. Try to connect to http://<first address>:8910/test on your computer (for me, that is http://192.168.1.1:8910/t )
  5. Different browsers will show the info differently, but you should get something approximately like this:
    • This is the iTunes remote.
  6. If you can't connect with the first IP address, try the second (and so on)

Assuming this works, you have demonstrated that the helper is running properly on your computer.

Check you can connect from the Pre

  1. If you are having problems connecting, then it almost certainly means that a firewall is blocking the connection.
  2. The remote helper will try to set your computer's firewall correctly - but it can't change the firewall on your router.
  3. You can test the connection from your Pre in exactly the same way as above. Try to load http://<ip address>:8910/test in the web browser. If it times out - the connection is being blocked. If you get through - then all should work!
  1. The easiest way to troubleshoot is to turn off your firewall completely on your computer -AND- your router.
    • You can disconnect from the network while you do this - but you won't be able to use auto-pairing if you do.
    • Once you can connect, then you can turn the firewalls back on and tweak the settings until they allow the connection
